The Daviess County CEO class was welcomed by Washington Mayor Joe Wellman and his Administrative Assistant, Debbie Neukam at the mayor's chambers on Thursday, September 20. CEO students had the privilege of learning the important role that government plays in assisting entrepreneurs grow their business. Washington and Daviess County is very pro-active in welcoming and generating small business growth. Students learned the importance of such business incentives as Tax Abatements or Phase in taxes and TIF's or Tax Increment Financing Districts. Both are utilized by the city of Washington to bring business growth to the area. Students were also taught the difference between a town (no mayor, but a town board) and a city (elected mayor with a council). Washington is the only city in Daviess County. At the end of the visit, ten members of the CEO class had the opportunity to pass an ordinance (law). Mayor Emily Fields presided over the council meeting that included 7 council members, the city attorney and the clerk-treasurer. An amazing opportunity to engage with the mayor and to learn some basic civics.
