Daviess County CEO Cohort Gains Business Insights at Big Al’s Place
On August 21st, the Daviess County CEO Cohort visited Big Al’s Place, located on 4 E National Highway in Washington, for an inspiring tour and conversation with owner Allen Brown. Allen, now in his ninth season running a thriving food truck business, shared how his passion for food entrepreneurship was sparked by his mother’s 30-year career in catering. A skilled entrepreneur and handyman, Allen even builds his own food trailers, demonstrating the value of versatility in business.
During the visit, Allen offered students valuable lessons in entrepreneurship, emphasizing the importance of understanding industry regulations, building strong relationships with local health inspectors, and staying open to innovation and rebranding. He encouraged the group to embrace adaptability, create strong community connections, and view competition as a driving force for improvement.
Allen also stressed the significance of a thorough business plan, using the analogy, “You wouldn’t build a house without a plan,” and reminded the students to research every aspect of their business ideas. His advice was clear and practical: “Cheap is not always better; failure is an opportunity; do your research; and know the rules of any business.”
The visit concluded with a hands-on tour of the food truck, a fun group photo, and a thoughtful gesture—a popsicle for each student. The experience was both educational and memorable, leaving the Cohort inspired by Allen’s entrepreneurial spirit and dedication.
The Daviess County CEO Cohort extends a sincere thank you to Allen Brown and Big Al’s Place for their generosity, insight, and hospitality.
