On Tuesday, August 26, 2025, the Daviess County CEO Cohort visited Scoops in Washington for an inspiring afternoon of entrepreneurial learning. The students had the privilege of meeting with Julie and Eric Bassler, the dynamic duo behind the popular ice cream shop.
The Basslers are now in their eighth season as owners of Scoops, having purchased the thriving business from the Gray family as a venture that would involve their children. Their entrepreneurial spirit didn't stop there—they also successfully manage Cherry Ghost, another local business. Eric's commitments extend even further as he serves dual roles as an Edward Jones Financial Advisor and Indiana State Senator for District 39, making the couple exemplars of ambitious, multi-faceted leadership.
During their time with the cohort, the Basslers emphasized fundamental professional skills that often get overlooked. They stressed the importance of a firm handshake and good eye contact, reminding the young entrepreneurs that these small gestures can make significant impacts in business relationships.
Speaking candidly about entrepreneurship challenges, the couple shared their core philosophy: surround yourself with people who make you better. This principle has clearly guided their own success across multiple ventures.
The Basslers offered concrete guidance for aspiring entrepreneurs, advocating for a measured approach to business growth. They encouraged students to start small and take calculated risks rather than making dramatic leaps. Their practical tip about purchasing used equipment—often available "for pennies on the dollar"—demonstrated their commitment to keeping overhead low and maximizing resources.
Throughout the visit, the Basslers shared memorable quotes that resonated with the cohort:
**"If you watch your pennies, the dollars will take care of themselves"
**"Be efficient with things and effective with people"
**"People are always watching how you react to adversity"
**"We learn when we stub our toe"
**"Always remember, it doesn't matter what happens, it's how you respond to it"
**"Think about tomorrow but don't dwell on it"
These insights reflected their balanced approach to business—combining financial prudence with people-centered leadership and resilient problem-solving.
The cohort left Scoops with more than just business wisdom. Along with the invaluable knowledge shared by the Basslers, students enjoyed samples of the shop's ice cream, adding a literally sweet touch to their educational experience. The visit exemplified how successful local entrepreneurs can inspire the next generation while demonstrating that business success comes from combining smart strategy, strong relationships, and the courage to challenge yourself through calculated growth.
