The Daviess County CEO Cohort experienced an unforgettable blend of tradition and enterprise during their September 25th visit to Knepp's Amish Kountry Korner—a diverse business combining deli, bakery, bulk foods, and general store under one roof.
Proprietor Julie Knepp opened her doors and her playbook to the aspiring young entrepreneurs, revealing the remarkable evolution of her business. Though the current store launched August 1, 2020, its heritage dates to Knepp's Country Cafe in 1993. This transformation from café to comprehensive country store demonstrates Julie's knack for reading market demands while maintaining her core principles.
Faith, contentment, and resilience form the foundation of Julie's business philosophy—values that have sustained her through obstacles and expansion alike. She delivered an intensive entrepreneurship workshop covering crucial topics: pricing strategies, business structure decisions, competitive differentiation, and workforce management—particularly the persistent challenges of hiring and retention.
Julie emphasized a fundamental truth: entrepreneurship demands continuous learning. She highlighted the necessity of regular self-assessment, embracing change, and cultivating relationships with fellow business leaders for guidance and support. She also shared practical wisdom, noting "If it's not on the shelf you can't sell it"—a straightforward reminder about the importance of inventory management. For employees, she stressed the value of following instructions, understanding that consistency and reliability form the backbone of successful operations.
Perhaps her most compelling message transcended business tactics: prioritize family above all else. Even amid entrepreneurial demands, maintaining focus on life's most important relationships remains non-negotiable.
The experience extended beyond classroom learning—students savored the establishment's signature fresh-baked rolls and beverages. The cohort witnessed firsthand how values and vision can create lasting business success. Thank you Julie for all your support
