On Wednesday, October 8th, the Daviess County CEO Cohort joined the Martin County CEO Cohort for an insightful visit to Lark Ranch, where they met with Adam Lark for a thought-provoking discussion about the challenges and rewards of operating a seasonal business.
Since its founding in Loogootee, Indiana, in 2001, Lark Ranch has experienced remarkable growth. The business expanded to Greenfield, Indiana, in 2008, and added a third location in Lanesville, Indiana, this year. Lark Ranch has become a premier fall destination, featuring attractions such as corn mazes, pumpkin patches, rides, and food stands that create the ultimate autumn experience. When discussing the tornado that struck the Loogootee site, Adam emphasized to the cohorts: "In business and in life you will have setbacks," noting that people watch closely to see how you respond to adversity.
Adam's presentation covered several essential business topics. He addressed the practical logistics of managing an outdoor operation, humorously asking, "Do we have enough restrooms?" He explored the unique challenges of running a part-time seasonal business and stressed the importance of investing in infrastructure through refurbishment and strategic improvements to ensure sustainable growth. A standout point was the value of building business relationships and forming partnerships, such as this year's collaboration with the Colts, to drive mutual success.
Adam credited his father, Matt Lark, with creating the original vision for a unique fall experience that has fueled the business's success. He encouraged aspiring entrepreneurs to think outside the box and break free from self-imposed limitations while exploring alternative revenue streams to grow and diversify their businesses.
The Daviess County CEO Cohort thanked Adam for his hospitality and enjoyed a memorable morning, including a train ride that added to the experience. Lark Ranch exemplifies how innovation, hard work, and entrepreneurial spirit can transform a vision into a thriving reality.
