On March 16, 2026, the Daviess County CEO Cohort visited the Daviess County Airport for an engaging, firsthand look into the world of aviation. During their visit, students connected with Airport Manager Erica Burkemper and Commercial Pilot and Instructor Scott Woods, who shared both their professional experiences and personal insights into the industry.
A key message they emphasized was the importance of stepping outside of your comfort zone and being open to new opportunities. They highlighted Indiana’s unique position as a “crossroads in the sky,” noting that this gives the Daviess County Airport strong potential for continued growth—not only as a vital resource for the local community, but also as a strategic connection point for businesses throughout the region.
The airport plays a critical role in supporting general aviation, offering services and facilities for incoming and outgoing flights, and serving as a link for companies traveling to corporate locations. Erica also discussed future plans for improvement, including upgrades to the airport’s fuel system to better serve pilots and expand capabilities.
Despite cold and windy conditions, the cohort had the opportunity to tour several hangars, gaining a closer look at aircraft and daily airport operations. Throughout the visit, students learned about the wide range of career opportunities currently available in aviation, many of which are in high demand. Scott shared how flying has been both a career and a passion for him, even describing how he enjoys flying his aerobatic aircraft as a way to relax.
Students also learned about the airport’s recent runway expansion, completed over the summer, which now allows for larger aircraft to land—making the airport an even more attractive option for area businesses.
The cohort is grateful to Erica and Scott for taking time out of their busy schedules to provide such an informative and inspiring experience, highlighting the many possibilities within the aviation field
