On April 8, 2026, the Daviess County CEO Cohort had the opportunity to reconnect with returning guest speaker Rob Dyer of Home Depot. Back in the classroom, Rob focused his message on a topic he cares deeply about—living and leading with strong values.
Using a baseball comparison, he reminded students that while “home runs are rare, base hits happen every day,” encouraging them to focus on consistent, positive actions rather than waiting for big moments.
Throughout the session, he shared practical lessons that have shaped both his career and personal life. He emphasized the importance of negotiation skills—being able to communicate clearly, listen, and find common ground. He also spoke about the power of gratitude and reciprocity, encouraging students to appreciate others and return kindness whenever possible.
Students were challenged to reflect on their own direction by asking themselves whether they are moving forward or slipping backward. Rob stressed the importance of passion, explaining that energy and commitment are often what separate success from mediocrity. He reinforced the idea that history doesn’t just happen—it is created by those willing to take action.
Another key takeaway was staying true to what matters most. Rob encouraged students not to lose sight of their core values, even when faced with challenges. He also highlighted how attention to detail can make a significant difference, reminding the group that excellence is often found in the small things.
Drawing from examples tied to Shep Gordon, sharing insights on leadership and relationships, including the well-known quote: “Being nice is more important than being right.” These stories helped reinforce the importance of character in both business and life.
He also spoke candidly about real-world business challenges, including issues related to organized crime, the shift toward online operations, and the impact of internal theft—reminding students that sometimes the greatest risks come from within an organization.
His passion for developing future leaders was evident throughout the visit, as he encouraged the cohort to think deeply about their values, choices, and future paths.
Thank you to Rob for investing his time and sharing meaningful insights with the Daviess County CEO students. His commitment to guiding the next generation continues to make a lasting impact.
