On April 24, 2026, the Daviess County CEO Cohort visited Advanced Steel for an engaging and insightful experience with owner Russ Miller, joined by Thomas Gearin and Jared Wagler. What began as a business visit quickly became a meaningful conversation about vision, perseverance, and the mindset required to succeed.
Miller opened by sharing a personal story about his grandfather, Al Miller, who—despite his Amish background—once had the opportunity to pitch for the Cleveland Indians. The story set the tone for the day, highlighting how unexpected opportunities can arise when individuals are willing to step beyond perceived limitations.
Throughout the session, Miller emphasized the importance of dreaming boldly and thinking creatively. He spoke about leading with care for others, staying determined through challenges, and empowering people by trusting them with responsibility. He reminded students that the choices they make today can have a lasting impact on their future and their families.
Drawing from his experience in the roll forming industry, Miller explained how he expanded into light gauge steel construction in 2020. By investing in a roll forming machine, Advanced Steel now produces precision-formed steel components used to create durable 2×4 and 2×6 framing systems. The company focuses on manufacturing pre-engineered steel wall panels, offering builders a faster and more efficient alternative to traditional wood framing.
Advanced Steel continues to push boundaries within the construction industry. While currently specializing in portable self-storage units, the company has also taken on residential projects using steel framing. Miller shared his vision for continued growth and innovation, demonstrating how adaptability and forward thinking can open new doors.
One of the key takeaways Miller left with the group was a simple but powerful idea: there are three kinds of people—those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who wonder what happened. He encouraged students to be proactive by setting goals, thinking outside the box, and pushing through obstacles. He also stressed the importance of staying grounded in faith and keeping Christ at the center of their journey.
The cohort left the visit thankful for Miller’s openness and wisdom. His story offered a powerful reminder that with vision, creativity, and a willingness to take risks, meaningful success is within reach.
