Daviess County CEO Takes the Mic at WAMW. On Tuesday, September 8, 2026, the Daviess County CEO Cohort had the opportunity to step behind the microphone and experience the world of radio during a visit to WAMW. Station owner Dewayne Shake, who also operates Memories 107.9, The General 95.9 and 101.3, WRZR 94.5, and 1580 WAMW, welcomed the students and shared lessons from his years in broadcasting and business.
The visit quickly became interactive when Dewayne challenged the students to step up to the microphone and speak for 30 seconds without using filler words such as “um” or “huh.” The activity challenged the students to think quickly while speaking clearly and confidently. It was a great reminder that being able to communicate a message effectively is an important skill in any career or business.
Special congratulations to Sarah Arthur, who successfully completed the challenge—she nailed it! Dewayne encouraged the students throughout the activity with a simple but powerful message: “Don’t be afraid—tell your story!”
From there, Dewayne turned the conversation toward one of the most important parts of running a successful business—advertising. He explained that radio commercials have a limited amount of time to make an impression, often just 15, 30, or 60 seconds. Because of that, businesses have to make every word count, no dead time.
Dewayne shared the phrase “sell the sizzle, not the steak,” explaining that an advertisement needs to grab people's attention and create enough interest that they want to know more. He also pointed out that the time between the songs is extremely valuable because that is when businesses have the opportunity to connect with listeners.
Another important lesson focused on the need to keep moving forward. Dewayne told the students, “The only way to coast is downhill.” His message was that businesses cannot simply become comfortable and expect continued success. Staying visible, continuing to promote your business, and investing in advertising are all important parts of keeping a business moving in the right direction.
Dewayne also challenged the students to think about their own products and services. If you truly believe in what you are offering, you should be willing to tell others about it. Effective advertising helps businesses create awareness while also developing relationships, credibility, and trust with their customers.
The WAMW visit provided the CEO students with much more than a look inside a radio station. They gained practical experience in public speaking while learning how communication and advertising can directly impact a business.
The Daviess County CEO Cohort sincerely thanks Dewayne for his time, encouragement, and continued support of the CEO organization. His willingness to share his experiences and challenge the students gave the cohort valuable lessons they can carry with them throughout their entrepreneurial journeys.
