Daviess County CEO Cohort Gains Insight from Health Department Supervisor On September 10, the Daviess County CEO Cohort welcomed Geoff Stoner, Environmental Health Supervisor with the Daviess County Health Department, for an informative discussion about food safety, business responsibilities, and what it takes to successfully operate a food-related business.
With nearly 20 years of experience, overseeing more than 200 food establishments and helps coordinate approximately 360 to 400 inspections each year. He explained the importance of obtaining proper permits, understanding regulations, and being prepared for inspections before opening a food business.
A central message of Stoner’s presentation was “Educate before we regulate.” He explained that his goal is to help business owners understand expectations and correct problems before enforcement becomes necessary. Students also learned that public perception matters and that an entrepreneur’s attitude is big when dealing with customers, employees, inspectors, and the community.
Stoner encouraged students to think before they act, explaining that business owners sometimes make decisions without considering the possible consequences. Planning ahead, setting clear goals, managing time wisely, and understanding requirements can help prevent problems and create a stronger business.
He also reflected on the challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic, when businesses and health departments faced situations without a clear roadmap. The experience reinforced the importance of flexibility, communication, and being willing to adapt when circumstances change. He encouraged students to remain authentic while pursuing their goals and entrepreneurial ideas.
The cohort was highly engaged, asking questions about permits, inspections, food businesses, and the responsibilities that come with operating a business. The discussion gave students a better understanding of the connection between compliance, reputation, and long-term success.
