Daviess County CEO Cohort Gains Valuable Business Lessons from Sheldon Graber. On Monday, September 22, the Daviess County CEO Cohort traveled to the southwest side of Washington for an engaging and educational visit with local entrepreneur and past CEO mentor Sheldon Graber, owner of Yacht House Marine and Washington Brake and Alignment.
Sheldon shared his experiences as a business owner while challenging the students to think beyond the excitement of starting a business and focus on the preparation and responsibilities that come with ownership. He emphasized that successful businesses are built on careful planning and a thorough understanding of the costs involved.
One of the key lessons Sheldon shared was his “What does my light switch cost?” philosophy. He encouraged students to think about every expense associated with operating a business—from utilities and insurance to establishing the proper legal entity, paying employees, and managing other ongoing costs. His message was simple but important: Know your numbers.
The cohort also learned about the importance of professionalism, understanding the difference between providing a service and selling a product, identifying and managing risks, and protecting the corporate veil. Sheldon stressed that integrity must remain at the center of every business decision. He reminded the students that a successful business is ultimately about making people happy—both employees and customer.
Sheldon also discussed the importance of learning from failure rather than being afraid of it. He encouraged the students to continue growing, adapting, and learning throughout their entrepreneurial journey. His closing message provided the students with plenty to think about: “Failure is out there. Learn from it and fall forward. If you quit learning, you will go backwards. Never sell yourself short!”
The Daviess County CEO Cohort sincerely thanks Sheldon for sharing his time, experience, and knowledge with the students. The group especially appreciated the opportunity to tour the facility, learn more about his businesses, and receive an up-close look at one of the beautiful yachts. His willingness to share both his successes and lessons learned provided the students with valuable insight into what it takes to build and sustain a successful business
