On April 10, 2026, the Daviess County CEO Cohort had the opportunity to visit Martin Tire and Auto and learn directly from owners Jay and Brock, along with team members Johan, Stuart, Hunter, and Mitch. The group shared the story of how they transitioned from separate career paths to making the collective decision to open a family-run business.
Located in Montgomery, Indiana, Martin Tire and Auto has spent the past three years building a strong reputation as a dependable, full-service auto shop. While they offer a wide variety of automotive services, Jay and Brock explained that oil changes and tire work make up a large portion of their day-to-day operations. They also emphasized how much the support of the Montgomery community has contributed to their growth, noting that local relationships have played a key role in their success.
Throughout the visit, the team offered practical insights into what it takes to operate a successful small business. They highlighted the importance of taking responsibility for customers and being proactive in vehicle care, sharing the idea that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
They also discussed several important aspects of their business, including the ongoing challenge of managing inventory—especially with the constant demand for different tire sizes and types. Maintaining high-quality products remains a top priority, and they work hard to stay informed about the best options available for their customers. Equally important is their commitment to excellent customer service, with a focus on building trust and long-term relationships.
One of the standout features of their operation is their dedication to hometown service. From personalized interactions to offering convenient options like picking up and delivering vehicles, they strive to make the experience as easy and reliable as possible for their customers.
During the visit, the team also walked students through their inspection process when worn tires are identified. By showing actual examples, they explained how they communicate safety concerns and ensure customers fully understand the condition of their vehicles before leaving the shop, including the importance of proper documentation and customer acknowledgment.
Overall, the experience gave the cohort a valuable, real-world look at the daily operations and decision-making involved in running a small business. The Daviess County CEO Cohort is grateful to Jay, Brock, and their team for sharing their time, knowledge, and experiences.
