On April 14, 2026, students from the Daviess County CEO program teamed up with the Gibson County CEO cohort for a powerful, behind-the-scenes experience at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana. The visit gave students a firsthand look at how one of the world’s leading automotive companies operates, from the production floor to the people and systems that drive its success.
Throughout the day, the group was guided by Heather Mundy, Adam Lange, Eric Westlund, and Chad Goldsmith, who introduced students to key areas of the business. Conversations focused on workforce development, safety expectations, hiring practices, and the importance of maintaining high standards in quality. Toyota’s team consistently emphasized adaptability, growth, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
One idea that stood out was the value of flexibility within a career path. Students were encouraged to explore different roles and develop a wide range of skills, reinforcing the belief that being versatile strengthens both employees and the organization as a whole.
Speakers also shared practical advice for success, encouraging students to:
1. Step outside their comfort zones
2.Build strong, meaningful networks
3. Stay organized and manage multiple responsibilities
4. Prioritize safety in every situation
5. Take initiative and look for ways to improve each day
6. Be willing to take risks and embrace new opportunities
7. Develop discipline, including strong daily habits
Despite a water line issue that limited full participation, part of the group was able to take a guided shuttle tour of the facility. This included a look at the test track, safety procedures in action, and insight into the Toyota Gazoo Racing team. Students also took part in a hands-on team-building activity using LEGO models, where they worked together to assemble trucks while identifying inefficiencies and improving workflow—an engaging introduction to lean manufacturing principles.
The experience highlighted several key aspects of Toyota’s culture, including mentorship, a positive mindset, attention to detail, and a strong focus on process improvement. These values were reflected in the company’s well-known mindset of continuous progress and innovation.
With a facility that spans the size of roughly 81 football fields, students were struck by the scale, organization, and precision required to keep operations running smoothly. The visit left a strong impression and gave students a deeper understanding of what it takes to succeed in a large, fast-paced industry.
The Daviess and Gibson County CEO cohorts are grateful to Toyota for opening its doors and providing such a meaningful learning opportunity. A special thank you goes to Rick Coleman for organizing the visit and helping create a smooth and memorable experience for everyone involved.
